After I took the Vera Wang home and happily shared the news of our union (lol), I set forth to get her modified and cleaned.
I contacted the seamstress I’d worked with for multiple prom and bridesmaid dresses and we went over the changes I wanted…
1. determine and create bustle
2. remove sashes
3. change back of dress from simple zip to a more detailed, somewhat open back similar to an Anne Barge dress that I love)
We agreed upon the changes and I bid my dress farewell (but not before shooting several photos!).
After some time, my seamstress contacted me about sending the dress to be cleaned, something we’d already agreed would happen during the alterations process. I had planned to take it to the Macy’s designated shop and wish I had, but I went along with her suggestion and had it sent to the Temple Cleaners near her shop.
Of course I contacted the shop owner, asked about processes, solutions and quantity of dresses. They weren’t a member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists, but I felt fine, since one of the cleaners that is a member is a place I would NEVER trust with anything, even a blouse, after my experience with them. He assured me that my dress would be in good hands, I believed him.
She called a few weeks later and said, “I’d like you to come in and see the dress before I continue.” Uh oh.
I arrived at my fitting/viewing with my mother and niece in tow. My seamstress unwrapped my gown and I saw… gray streaks across the bodice! I fought my tears as I searched my dress and found more random marks… 2 of them further down the skirt.
The kicker was that I HAD to pay to take my dress. My seamstress, whom I had trusted for over 10 years, kept saying that “oh, you must have not noticed the marks before, but they must have been there, they couldn’t have done that.”
So, I had to pay the bill, just to take the damaged dress home. Ugh.
I have photos, and am contacting the “cleaner” today (to see if I can get them to refund the money spent) about the damages, but what else can I do?!
Now, the question is… get a new dress or pay $200+ more to see if I can get the stains out. My heart says to cut and run, but still… It’s a Vera!
What do you think?
