7 Nov

OMG – this dress is just… breathtaking.

It is simply breathtaking. Find it here.

Fabulous 70s Longsleeve Wedding Dres3

13 Sep

This ebay dress has major potential. If it were mine, I’d have the applique removed (if possible) and have the back altered to be a plunging neckline that hits closer to the natural waist. I know my seamstress would make that alteration for $50 or less. I can see this dress in a gorgeous outdoor ceremony and/or reception – with some fabulous cowboy boots and loose, wavy hair. The bouquet would be wildflowers or fresh lavender.

The dress is listed for $69 and looks like it’d fit someone in the size 8-12 range.

The Budget: How Much Did We Really Spend?

5 Jun

Neither R nor I ever wanted an extravagant day. While I completely appreciate those weddings, and love attending them, we knew that it was most important for us to have our wedding, and have it paid off on the day it occured.

We didn’t want to incur or carry any debt from the wedding, just as we didn’t carry any debt for my gorgeous engagement ring – see below (which is a testament to the awesome saving-skills of my husband).

Well — the wedding is over, and we can proudly say that we do not owe a dime – to a single vendor or a credit card or anyone. This wedding is PAID FOR!

Vendor Review – Makeup Artist

22 May

Vendor grade: A

I found my makeup artist on craigslist (I know!). She shared some great work that she’d done, and I booked her for a trial, just to make sure she’d be able to make me look good.

Elida showed up at my house with an arsenal of makeup. It was on rollers, had handles, and was made of that pounded metal… I was a little impressed and a little intimidated.

She got to work immediately, laying out 2 different combinations for my eyes (after asking what I wanted and assessing my coloring). I was thrilled that she was using MAC cosmetics — they’ve been my go-to brand for years.

The first combo was a smoky mix of browns and taupes. The second combo had some pops of pinky purples, with the majority of the colors being neutral. I went with the second combo because, as a green/hazel eyed girl, I know enough about color to know what makes my eyes shine.

Elida started working, and we chit-chatted while she did her thing.

I loved the results (see them here).

On the wedding day, she showed up 10 minutes early (awesome) and started to set up. She did SUCH a fabulous job — the highlighting, the contouring, the false lashes, the airbrush (!!!) — everything came together for a natural, yet gorgeous look.

I received SO many compliments on my appearance that day! I only wish I could have Elida do my makeup every day.

Her prices were certainly manageable too. Under $100 for the day-of (at your location) and under $50 for the trial.

Contact her here or e-mail me for her info.

Our DIY Photobooth

11 May

We (well, I) really like the idea of having a photobooth at our reception. I looked into renting one, for about 30 seconds. I cannot stomach the thought of spending $2,000 to have someone haul in a fun prop for 2 hours.

My sister has friends in art school, one of whom is a photographer. We’ve contracted her work for 2 hours for a low fee. We’ll provide the backdrop and props, she’ll provide the photos. even if they aren’t smashing, how can you complain at a pricetag of less than $150?

Here’s what we’ve got so far:

Of course we’ll have more props (to be shared in a future post). Here’s hoping our guests enjoy and take advantage of it!

Here are just a few of the photos we got out of the photobooth.

p.s. if anyone wants the name of a photography student who might be willing to help out with your DIY photobooth, and you live in Minneapolis or Saint Paul, drop me an e-mail.

Something to Top Our Cake

24 Apr

We hemmed and hawed over the cake topper for some time.

I like bird cake toppers a lot, and they’d mesh well with our card “box” — but the ones I wanted were difficult to justify the price (they went from $70 when I found them, to $120).

I thought of a DIY cake topper, but I am my own worst critic when it comes to my work, and I didn’t want to spend the day wishing they were cooler.

We like the idea of something customized, and I spent many hours on etsy checking out the fabulous choices available.

We finally settled on Naked Peggies. They’re like Goose Grease’s toppers, but I feel like they look a little more personable.

Suzy was great to work with, and our little dopplegangers arrived last night!

Here they are!

Send Some Love to Your Love

4 Feb

Love it!

Hello Handmade Paperie is offering something wonderful for Valentine’s day. They’re selling a limited edition of 100 custom letterpress cards printed by Pistachio Press on Crane Letra. The awesome part is that they’re taking your custom message and writing it with custom calligraphy on the back… I *may* have sent one to my love for V day (and might have sent a few others as well — they are so gorgeous)!

What a sweet, lovely keepsake with an eye-popping *wow* presentation (and a fine price tag to match!).
